The kindness of a review

Saturday, October 15th, 2016

I wish I had seen this very thoughtful review of my third novel in Landfall much earlier. I remember feeling very vulnerable. This would have been such comfort.

As it is now, too, of course.

Read here.

Encouragement

Tuesday, April 8th, 2014

I know you are supposed to say that ¬†reviews don’t matter. That you never even read them. I must admit, though, that to me they do matter, and I do read them. When Sonata for Miriam was just published and Boston blogger called it a four-star turkey it did hurt. And no matter how many excellent reviews my book received, that single bad one has stayed in my mind. In the fragile final stages of writing my fourth novel, tentatively titled¬†The blackbird sings at dusk,¬†it was comforting and encouraging to see this blog comment on¬†The Memory of love:¬†Basso Profundo.

The kindness of your nature at JFK airport

A friend snapped this picture of my book at JFK airport yesterday. It is a slightly surreal feeling to realise that the book has a life of its own over in the US, while I am sitting here on this particularly grey day in Auckland. It is easy to think that nothing happens when you hear and see nothing. So, this image was a most welcome sign that my book is doing well. Without me. The odd review has been coming through, all good. So, instead of browsing for more information I should let it go. And return to my task.

The memory of love – the film

Friday, March 22nd, 2013

I was offered to contribute to a US blog and describe my dream cast, should my book me made into a film. You can read it here: My book, the movie

We are allowed to dream, aren’t we?

Swedish book reviews

Thursday, October 25th, 2012

Doing what you should never do – googling myself – I came upon this interesting blog:

Swedish Book Review

I thought the review of my own novel, ‘The Kindness of Your Nature’/’The Memory of Love’, was interesting and thoughtful, and I continued to read several others. I recommend it for anybody with an interest in Swedish literature.

My third novel, The kindness of your nature/Det goda inom dig will be released in Germany 10 September (my birthday – auspicious, I hope) and I look forward to going to the Frankfurt Book Fair in October as one of the New Zealand authors invited to participate in the celebration of New Zealand as the guest of honour country.

The kindness of Finland

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

The Finnish cover for The Kindness of Your Nature РKaikki Hyvä Sinussa Рhas just arrived. I am very, very pleased with how it looks.
As an excerp for the back of the cover, the following passage has been chosen:
“Here, I realised that the darkness was not absolute. From up there on the deck the sea had been one with the surrounding darkness. But now I saw a multitude of shifting grey hues, as manifold as the most colourful landscape.”

Publication is scheduled for March 2012.
Publisher Gummerus
Translation Anuirmeli Sallamo-Lavi

I am grateful to the team who has looked after my books so very well in Finland, and I hope this release will make us all proud.
